It’s Hispanic Heritage Month, the annual reminder that an enormous amount of American culture—from our food and music to our language and entertainment—has Latin American fingerprints all over it.
And because somebody will ask: yes, it starts on September 15, not September 1. Apparently even heritage months enjoy making trivia players second-guess themselves. The date actually makes sense: September 15 marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with Mexico and Chile celebrating theirs shortly afterward.
Hispanic Heritage Month is also a great excuse to appreciate an incredibly diverse collection of cultures. Mexico isn’t Argentina, Cuba isn’t Colombia, and Spain definitely isn’t Puerto Rico—which is important information when your teammate confidently whispers, “Dude, they all speak Spanish.”
